Gerhard Richter - P17 (Tulips 1995) - 2017

Although the years between 1995-96 mainly saw the production of abstract paintings by Richter, floral still lives represents the more intimate and tender of Richter's output from this intensive period of work.

Departing from the traditions of flower painting, Richter's unconventional compositional cropping builds up a tension: opening up the inseparable reference to photography whilst at the same time, signifying the artist's direct engagement with the iconographic tradition of still life painting, yet another art history genre covered by Richter's oeuvre.

Tulips is formalistically separated into two colour fields, essentialzing the flowers. By singularly focusing on this blossom, the image raises the issue of our relationship to nature and our experiential reality of it. Richter offers a simple statement: passionately drawing the eye to a hazy, visionary delight of a vase of yellow tulips.
