Rob Pruitt, Graffiti Chair.
Rob Pruitt's new exhibition opened on May 11th at the Brant Foundation Art Study Center, on view through mid-September. With Graffiti Chair, Pruitt plays with form and functionality in the tradition of a Franz West chair and other great artist furniture (be it an Yves Klein coffee table or a Dan Colen bench). Conceived after Pruitt’s graffitied plywood tabletops in his solo exhibition at Gavin Brown’s enterprise last October, this edition is “tricked out with tangles of images from comics, cartoons, and advertising ... hand-drawn in fluorescent colors and black lines with consummate assurance by Mr.Pruitt’s studio assistants,” Roberta Smith wrote in The New York Times in 2014.
