Ai Weiwei - Vases in Five Colours - 2024

Made of Murano glass, these sculptures symbolise a dialogue between the old and the new. In their presentation, Ai Weiwei invites us to reflect on preserving traditions in an increasingly globalised world and reconsider the cultural and material value of everyday objects.

The works are reminiscent of the Ai Weiwei’s iconic Dropping a Han Dynasty Urn (1995). In this performance for camera, Weiwei is shown dropping and smashing a 2,000-year-old ceremonial urn, stating that “It’s powerful only because someone thinks it’s powerful and invests value in the object.”

New Art Editions is happy to share these vases in five new colourways: black, white, yellow, blue and green. Published in an edition of only 100, these vases have an engraved signature and number on the base and include a hand-signed certificate of authenticity.
