Ai Weiwei – To Be Looked At… *SOLD*

Ai Weiwei - To Be Looked At...  SOLD

Ai Weiwei turns the camera on collectors with an edition of sculptures in cut aluminium.

Surveillance and Ai Weiwei have a long history. From paper lanterns calling attention to the invasion of his privacy by the Chinese government to an architectural installation which followed art fair attendees threateningly through an unlit room, he has created works of art that reflect on the acts of looking, and being looked at. Conceptually, the works build on his observations about the ways in which surveillance embodies and upholds pre-existing dynamics of power.

To Be Looked At… takes the form of a bank of CCTV cameras, pointing in multiple directions for uninterrupted vision. The sculpture can be either wall-mounted or displayed on a flat surface.

Installed in homes around the world, the cameras and their pseudo-surveillance embody Weiwei’s wry humour. At the same time, they acknowledge an experience that has become – in 2024 – an inescapable part of being alive.
