Alicja Kwade - Pirum Inversum - 2024
Meet "Pirum Inversum" – the pear that turns the laws of nature on its head!
This new variety fundamentally changes how gravity interacts with the fruit. With this fruit, the thick end sits at the top, the slender end at the bottom. Thanks to an innovative cultivation method in which the young trees are repeatedly turned upside down, sometimes with their roots in the air and sometimes in the ground as usual, the fruit memorizes a growth direction. This method changes the pear's internal gravitational dynamics and promotes the accumulation of more juice at the top.
The upside-down pear is not only particularly sweet and aromatic, but also long-lasting: The altered gravity keeps it fresh longer. We wanted to preserve this freshness even longer, so we cast the object in bronze and hand-painted it. This ensures that each fruit lasts forever – each one unique!
