Beatriz Milhazes - Histórias Tropicais II - 2025
Beatriz Milhazes has generously produced Histórias Tropicais II, 2025, a limited edition artwork to celebrate the recent retrospective of her work at Tate St Ives, 25 May – 29 September 2024.
Milhazes is known for exuberant and colourful large-scale abstract canvases which incorporate a unique collage process. To add motifs to her paintings, she paints onto a sheet, peels off the motifs and layers them onto the canvas, creating a collage-like effect. Realising the similarities between this collage process and the logic of print, Milhazes integrated printmaking into her overall practice. Her screenprints and relief works evolve in tandem with, and have often had impacts on, her paintings.
Her screen print edition for Tate, titled Histórias Tropicais II, 2025, is inspired by the tropical nature of Rio de Janeiro where she lives and works. Her studio is in the Jardim Botânico neighborhood, home of the Botanical Garden, which has over 6,500 species of plants and trees, and close to the Tijuca National Park, a large urban rainforest within city limits. The print has around 60 colours and was made by a trusted print-maker in Rio who has produced several editions with Milhazes.
