Caroline Achaintre – TASCHE *SOLD*

Caroline Achaintre - TASCHE - 2016  SOLD OUT

Caroline Achaintre - ASCHE - 2016An edition produced by rising star Caroline Achaintre on the occasion of her solo exhibition at BALTIC Centre for Contemporary Art. This exclusive limited edition artwork forms part of the BALTIC Edition series.

Made in an edition of 8, Achaintre's wall based ceramic sculpture TASCHE, 2016 takes the form of an upturned handbag with a textured, scaly surface. The artist's ceramic works are made from fired and glazed paper clay. The surfaces are often glossy and seductive emulating snakeskin or crocodile skin and evoking notions of the exotic. Achaintre sees faces in handbags and often explores ideas around animism in her work.

Caroline Achaintre (born Toulouse, 1969) trained as a blacksmith in Germany before moving to London to study fine art. Her works on paper, textile and ceramics are a heady mix of colour, form and expression. Drawing from a wide range of sources including Primitivism and German Expressionism, the exoticism of carnival and the playfulness of pop, her approach is process-based embracing materials and surface. Candy-coloured watercolours, densely tufted woollen threads and seductive glossy glazes have all become part of her highly distinctive visual style.
