Francis Upritchard, Harlequin Head, 2014.
New Zealand born artist Francis Upritchard created the limited edition Harlequin Head, 2014 to accompany Do What You Will, her Whitechapel Gallery Children’s Commission, a new installation made specially for young audiences and presented at the Whitechapel Gallery from 10th June-28th September 2014.
Upritchard’s work is rooted in cultural history, rituals, and storytelling - from the 1960’s hippie movement and psychedelia to gothic folklore and beyond. Often re-interpreting history through playfully imagined 'found’ artifacts or curios, she engages the viewer’s imagination in all manner of weird and wonderful momento mori.
