Lubaina Himid – Lemon *SOLD*

Lubaina Himid - Lemon - 2025. SOLD OUT

An edition of 50 prints commissioned to mark Lubaina Himid and Magda Stawarska’s exhibition Another Chance Encounter at Kettle’s Yard this summer.

Each print in the edition is unique, with Himid first painting directly onto each sheet of paper in vibrant colours and patterns typical of her work. These bold backdrops have then been overlaid with a handprinted silkscreen image of a lemon, made in collaboration with master printer, Magda Stawarska.

Lubaina Himid has often depicted lemons in her paintings. For Himid, lemons can represent many things: a natural shock of colour, a beautiful fruit with a bitter taste, something to trade or bargain with. The lemon is also significant for Kettle’s Yard. Jim Ede, who created Kettle’s Yard with his wife Helen, placed a single fresh lemon every week or so on a grey pewter plate in the Kettle’s Yard house: a tradition which continues to this day. For Ede, the lemon was a means of drawing attention to the pops of yellow found in the paintings displayed nearby, and encourage visitors to think about how art is in conversation with the everyday world.

The prints are supplied in a bespoke limed-finish oak frame, approved by the artist. Handmade in Cambridgeshire by a local framer, the frame is solid oak with white stain and low reflection glass. The prints are mounted to a conservation standard.
