Mark Leckey – Grasping & Gasping *SOLD*

Mark Leckey, Grasping & Gasping (Pylons & Nylons and Hooves & Hands and Benson & Hedges), 2014  SOLD OUT

Mark Leckey, Grasping & Gasping (Pylons & Nylons and Hooves & Hands and Benson & Hedges), 2014Since the late 1990s, when he first presented the seminal work Fiorucci Made Me Hardcore (1999), Mark Leckey’s dynamic and varied output has made a significant impact and continues to be an important influence on the work of a new generation of artists in the UK and internationally. Through his videos, installations and live performances, Leckey explores the relationship of cultural artefacts to human subjectivity and the production of desire. He re-animates the things around us – objects, images, characters and brands – to examine the iconography of popular culture and its affective pull. Leckey’s Turner Prize award in 2008 and subsequent high profile institutional solo exhibitions, including the Serpentine Gallery, London (2011); the Hammer Museum, Los Angeles (2012); and the major survey currently on view at WIELS Contemporary Art Centre, Brussels (until January 2015) have confirmed his status amongst the most important artists working today. This special limited edition celebrates Mark Leckey’s significant contribution to Chisenhale Gallery and our wider artistic community.

Titled Grasping & Gasping (Pylons & Nylons and Hooves & Hands and Benson & Hedges) this exclusive limited edition is a diptych comprising a giclee print overlaid with two images silkscreened onto acetate.

Background images are collaged from stock photography – electricity pylons and fishnet tights sourced online – and juxtaposed with Benson & Hedges advertising from the 1980s. The adverts, found in magazines, feature the iconic gold cigarette pack in a series of surreal settings, devoid of words and people, in which the object embodies a set of characteristics, behaviour or style. Printed on acetate, with reference to traditional animation techniques, pairs of disembodied cartoon hands and hooves grasp at the surface of the image below.
