Martin Boyce – Birch Trees And Steel. *SOLD*

Martin Boyce - Birch Trees And Steel - 2018. SOLD OUT

Martin Boyce - Birch Trees And Steel - 2018Boyce’s discovery of a photograph of four concrete trees made by the French artists Joël and Jan Martel in for the famous exhibition of decorative arts held in Paris in 1925 has become the defining point for the future development of his artistic output.

He has since gone on to create his own versions of these modernist sculptures, encompassing sculptures, furniture, prints, lamps and birdhouses.

A further derivative of the Martels’ cubist-inspired interpretations of nature is a grid template from which Boyce has formed his own concrete typography. The texts and phrases that Boyce has used in his work over the years come from a wide variety of sources. Some are found in literature, others written by the artist himself while others might be overheard or misread then altered and rewritten. These angular letters appear often in his work and allow Boyce to cultivate his interest in language and narrative.

Boyce’s edition for Whitechapel Gallery features this typography. The letters spell out the title of the print and also his related 2011 sculpture shown in the recent iSelf Collection display, Birch Trees and Steel
