Chisenhale Gallery is pleased to announce a special limited digital print edition Espadrilles by Lisa Milroy, as part of the gallery’s Archive Editions series.
The Archive Editions series celebrates artists and collaborators who have participated in Chisenhale Gallery’s historic 38-year programme. The series comprises new limited edition works, kindly donated by the artists and all proceeds contribute to Chisenhale Gallery’s future artistic programme, supporting the next generation of artists.
Lisa Milroy’s practice is defined by her innovative approach to still life painting. Her 1995 Chisenhale Gallery solo exhibition Travel Paintings presented a new body of work to explore still life through the lens of architecture and travel, culminating in paintings of buildings and streetscapes of Rome, Tokyo, Kyoto and London.
Clothing and shoes are recurrent motifs in Milroy’s practice since the 1980s, and the artist’s sense of observation and pleasure in painting depictions of shoes are delightfully evidenced in Espadrilles. This special edition of digital prints captures the essence of summer - footwear encapsulating a moment of relaxed stillness and bearing the promise of carefree movement. The bright playful painterly gestures embody Milroy’s hallmark touch in paint and her enjoyment of pattern and colour.
