Zhang Enli, Iron Wire and Pipe, 2013. SOLD OUT
To accompany his new Space Painting in the ICA Theatre, Shanghai-based artist Zhang Enli has created an exclusive limited edition etching.
Zhang Enli is one of the most respected artists in China having become well-known for producing both painted environments and paintings featuring mundane objects such as tangled wires, old buckets, trees and cardboard boxes. Having recently completed his incredible Space Painting at the ICA, on view until 22 December, Enli continues to transform objects and places through his deft and magical use of paint. As with all his works, Enli uses thinly applied brush stokes that inevitably draw our attention to the materiality of the painted surface. For his ICA Edition, Enli has created a new etching, depicting the ordinary materials of iron, wire and pipe, delicately entangled.
Having grown up in the provincial town of Jilin in northern China, Enli's work continues to be marked by his transition twenty years ago to the sprawling metropolis of Shanghai. This extreme contrast is represented, not through the consumerist preoccupation so common in contemporary Chinese painting, but by observing ordinary, unpretentious objects that surround him in his studio and the general vicinity of the artist quarter on Moganshan Road.
