Paula Rego – Wary (Dog Woman) *SOLD*

Paula Rego - Wary (Dog Woman) - 2020 SOLD OUT

Paula Rego - Wary (Dog Woman) - 2020

Paula Rego has generously made the limited edition, Wary (Dog Woman), 1994/2020, available on the occasion of the exhibition Paula Rego at Tate Britain, 7 July – 24 October 2021.

Rego, who is known for her accomplished etching techniques, drew the plate for Wary (Dog Woman) in 1994. The same year, she began a sequence of large single-figure works in pastel known as the Dog Woman series. Rego had returned to life drawing and created these works with her model and collaborator, Lila Nunes. The figure of Dog Woman, crouched and snarling with teeth bared in rage and anguish, appears as early as 1952, and then 42 years later, embodied by Nunes, posing on all fours. Of these works, Rego has commented ‘to be a dog woman is not necessarily to be downtrodden; that has very little to do with it. In these pictures every woman's a dog woman, not downtrodden but powerful.’

The limited edition was printed by Paupers Press and published by the artist in 2020. This is the first time it has become available to purchase and all proceeds from sales made during the dates of the exhibition will support Tate.
