Private Collection - Ugo Rondinone - Sigarettesandwich, 2001 - 2003
Since the mid-1980s, Ugo Rondinone has been developing a polymorphic body of work that is increasingly gaining ground in Europe and the United States. After long playing with his own identity, as a clown or an icon in fashion magazines, Rondinone gradually makes this intermediary character disappear, neither he nor anyone else, and constructs an abstract universe that moves art into sensitive and melancholic spheres. In his video installations, he creates a visual and sound environment that sends the viewer into a hypnotic contemplation of the work broadcast in a loop. Using the same circular construction process, his video 'Cigarettesandwich' is a piece that captures the moment as a suspended, non-narrative moment, both obsessive and disturbing. Through the repetitive images of a man walking to the rhythm of haunting music, the artist invites us to enter a colorful world, intermediate between dream and reality.
