Ugo Rondinone created these two drawings for the 5th edition of RxArt's coloring book, Between the Lines: A Coloring Book by Contemporary Artists, Volume 5. This volume features works by 52 contemporary artists and is designed for children of all ages. The RxArt coloring books are distributed to pediatric patients in hospitals across the United States.
RxArt is a nonprofit organization with a mission to help children heal through the extraordinary power of visual art. They commission exceptional contemporary artists to transform children’s hospitals and healthcare facilities into engaging and inspiring healing environments full of beauty, humor, and comfort.
Rondinone uses clowns to explore human emotions and the universal experience of solitude. His acclaimed installation Vocabulary of Solitude features 45 life-size clown sculptures in a sterile environment, each frozen in a simple, everyday pose like "sleep" or "sit". These figures have blank, melancholic expressions, making them feel isolated and vulnerable. Rondinone's work strips away the typical cheerfulness associated with clowns, using the familiar figure as a poignant symbol of the quiet, personal moments that define human existence. Highlighting the shared feeling of being alone even in a crowd.
