Robert Longo - Untitled (Tree) - 2018
The enormous, photorealistic charcoal drawings by American artist Robert Longo show the beauty and horror of the present day and age. His large-format works contrast the innocence of sleeping toddlers, the tranquil grandiosity of Earth and the planets, roses in bloom, and Gothic cathedrals with threatening images of atom bomb explosions, fighter pilots, monster waves, sharks, and the muzzles of revolvers. Inexorably and seismographically precise the artists records the state of our world. Longo’s powerful motifs give form and expression to the feelings of fear and longing felt by people in the twenty-first century, and affect the viewer with the full force of the medium.
We are delighted that we are able to offer you this latest stunning pigment print titled ‘Untitled’ (Tree) by Robert Longo. The artist depicts this tree as a spiritual organism, as he has done with other remarkable trees in his ongoing Axis Mundi series. The Axis Mundi, in certain beliefs and philosophies, is the world center, or the connection between Heaven and Earth. As the celestial pole and geographic pole, it expresses a point of connection between sky and earth where the four compass directions meet. Rendered in dramatic black and white, the sharp contrast between light and dark creates a striking chiaroscuro, an effect similar to that of the artist's charcoal drawings.
