Sam Taylor-Johnson ‘Second Floor’

Sam Taylor-Johnson

Sam Taylor-Johnson, Second Floor, 2014.

Sam Taylor-Johnson, Second Floor, 2014.In 2011, Sam Taylor-Johnson travelled to Paris to document the rarely seen private apartment of Coco Chanel. Working closely with Counter Editions, Taylor-Johnson has produced ‘Second Floor’, a limited edition set of ten photographs presented in a specially designed cloth-bound box.

Taylor-Johnson spent several days at the apartment, realising in the process that she was "taking a portrait of a really complex person through objects and furniture. It was an unexpectedly absorbing experience. I truly believe that her spirit and soul still inhabit the second floor." From the rock-crystal chandelier with camelia flower forms that appeared often in her designs, to the golden birdcage that's become a recurring theme for the fashion house, each image is suffused with the essence and style of Mademoiselle Chanel.

The 'Second Floor' box set of photographs is being launched to coincide with a book of the photographs published by 7L (Karl Lagerfeld’s Paris based imprint) as well an an exhibition at the Saatchi Gallery, running from September 12th to October 4th 2014.
