Thomas Schütte - Man in the Wind - Three New Sculptures

Thomas Schütte (born 1954) is one of the most important sculptors of our time.
From 1973 to 1981, he studied at the Kunstakademie Düsseldorf with Fritz Schwegler and Gerhard Richter. His extraordinarily versatile work is characterized by conceptual clarity and experimental form finding. The diversity of the sculptures he creates is just as varied as the spectrum of materials and techniques he uses.
A central reference point of his figurative sculpture is the man in the mud, from whom large and small variations have been created since the 1980s. In different constellations, these works show on a circular base the figure of a man who stands with his lower legs directly on the ground as if his feet had sunk in it: The European tradition of sculpture - and in this case the monument as its most prominent task - is ironically recalled and artistically questioned. This context also includes the three large-format bronze sculptures Mann im Wind I-III, which have been on loan from the artist in Essen's Stadtgarten since 2019.
On the occasion of the anniversary "100 Years of Museum Folkwang", Thomas Schütte and the Kunstring Folkwang have now jointly published an edition of the three men in the wind. The figures can be purchased individually or as a set.
