Ugo Rondinone – The Sun (2024)

Ugo Rondinone's sun paintings have become an icon of contemporary art. Their positive energy and the extraordinary radiance of their seemingly pulsating colours captivate the viewer. They testify to the examination of central themes in art history, but also to the cultural intersections of this central symbol of power from East to West. His involvement with this body of work for over three decades underlines the depth of the artistic discussion. The series, which began in a meditative process with small watercolors, represents a very personal and emotional inner view, similar to a visual diary entry. This is also documented in the title by the date of each work written out in capital letters. Rondinone creates the artistically necessary distance from this intimate observation through a visually captivatingly precise transfer into large-format canvas paintings using the airbrush process or, in our case, a technical exploitation of the traditional screen printing process known from Pop Art.
