Ulla von Brandenburg - Gummy Teeth, Roudoudou, Snoep, Spiegeleier - 2018
The set of four photopolymer etchings are based on original drawings created by Ulla von Brandenburg especially for the Whitechapel Gallery. The edition accompanies her film commission, Ulla von Brandenburg: Sweet Feast, on display at Whitechapel Gallery 20 September 2018 – 31 March 2019. The film recreates an extraordinary moment in the history of the gallery, when in 1973 an exhibition featuring hundreds of types of sweets, which was staged to celebrate the UK’s entry to the European Common Market, was devoured by school children. The display included confectionary from the European Common Market members, including Belgium, French, Italian, Germany, Italy, Holland and the UK, and was the Whitechapel Gallery’s contribution to the ‘Fanfare for Europe’ celebrations.
Von Brandenburg’s drawings depict four different kinds of colourful confectionary, Gummy Teeth, Roudoudou, Snoepand Spiegeleier. The sweets, which are recognisable from childhood to many, conjure feelings of nostalgia and joy. The titles are in four languages, Dutch, English, French and German, suggesting that the sweets originate from these European countries. Against a background of Britain’s impending departure from the European Union in 2019, the four etchings are a bittersweet reminder of the British connection with the European market.
