Wangechi Mutu, Playing Cards, 2013.
The Kenyan-born, Brooklyn–based artist Wangechi Mutu is now showing at the Museum of Contemporary Art Australia in Sydney, 23 May-14 August 2013. Wangechi Mutu is known for her artworks that combine materials and imagery from diverse sources. Her collages feature image fragments from high fashion, hunting and motorcycle magazines as well as ethnographic journals and pornography. In these works, which range from postcard size to much larger pieces, she seeks out the black female body and how it is represented in popular culture.
