Gert and Uwe Tobias, Untitled, 2013. SOLD OUT
Romanian -born twin brothers Gert and Uwe Tobias have produced this exceptional hand-coloured stone lithograph printed edition to accompany their 2013 Whitechapel Gallery exhibition. The Tobias brothers work collaboratively, making woodcut prints, ceramic sculptures, collages and drawings. They employ not only the oldest form of printing, the woodblock, but also the now obsolescent typewriter, preferring to make use of techniques that emphasise the hand-made in contrast to mass-produced digital technologies. They draw on modernist geometric abstraction especially in the line, shape and colour of their large-format woodcuts and wall painting, which reference early 20th century Russian artists El Lissitzky and Vladimir Mayakovsky.
Gert and Uwe’s interests delve into art history and European folk art, referencing motifs, figures and typography gleaned from a variety of sources including medieval bestiaries, religious decorations, typography manuals and concrete poetry alongside more contemporary art and fashion books and magazines. The print Untitled, 2013 produced exclusively for the Whitechapel Gallery, references the brightly coloured hats, or Bollenhut, traditionally worn by women of the Black Forest region since the mid-1700’s .
