Private Sales - Thomas Ruff - Substrat 34 I, 2007-2016 SOLD
Fascinated by the various possibilities of photography, Thomas Ruff has employed analogue, dark-room techniques alongside computer-generated and digital images, photographs from scientific archives, and those appropriated from the Internet and print publishing in his oeuvre. With a focus on process and aesthetics, Ruff has approached topics including political propaganda, portraiture and the military application of, and manipulation of, photographic technologies, always with a questioning of the veracity of the image.
For the Whitechapel Gallery, Thomas Ruff has created a this work from his Substrat series to accompany this in the 2016 exhibition Electronic Superhighway 2016-1966. The luminous photographs in the Substrat series blur historic photographic techniques of camera-less photography utilised by image-makers such as Man Ray with contemporary modes of visual appropriation. In order to make this body of ‘camera-less’ work, Ruff adopted obscure images of Japanese anime and digitally manipulated their neon colours and forms to produce phantasmagoric abstractions detached from the original image.
