FIVE is Radius Books’ fifth in an ongoing series of limited-edition photography projects. Like the previous four volumes, the book combines photographic images with pieces of text, all of which respond to a joint theme. Inspired by Félix González-Torres’s quote “If a beautiful memory could have a colour, that colour would be blue,” the theme of this edition is centred on artists’ and writers’ connections to the colour blue, and to memory, and perhaps the relationship between the two. Using the theme as a conceptual starting point, we asked each artist to provide an image based on their interpretation, then asked a writer to respond while keeping broader implications in mind, such as issues of ecology, climate, wonder, mythology, and the persistent appeal these creatures have for contemporary artists. As with previous editions, each picture was printed by Michael Lundgren on Hahnemühle paper, signed by the artist, and hand-tipped into each book.
Artwork by Aspen Mays, Barbara Bosworth, Binh Danh, Dakota Mace, Erin Shirreff, Gina Osterloh, Paul Mpagi Sepuya, and Todd Hido (featured below).
