Carmen Herrera – Negro y Naranja

Universal Limited Art Editions has released Carmen Herrera's final edition Negro y Naranja in celebration of the artist's first posthumous exhibition at Lisson Gallery, "The 1970s: Part 1".
Negro y Naranja was completed in 2021 and continues to explore Herrera's interest in how tension is created by the use of form and line. She always started with a sketch on gridded paper to create the structure of an image and explore color. Once the composition of a sketch was satisfactory, she would then create a formal painting on paper followed by a larger painting on canvas. In 2017 Herrera began working with ULAE to add printmaking in her process. Much of her time working with the studio was spent reflecting on how her work evolves from the initial sketch to the final painting and how an image would translate through different printmaking processes.
