Josh Smith - Untitled - 2021. SOLD OUT
The Drawing Center annually commissions an artist to make a print for sale to benefit our programs and events. This year, the brilliant painter and printmaker Josh Smith has collaborated with the Long Island City-based press, Derriere L'Etoile, to produce a remarkable series of monoprints featuring what has become one of his signature motifs, a palm tree silhouetted in front of a multi-color sunset.
Recalling the traditions of gestural abstraction, these compositions also share an affinity with the paintings of David Hockney, and the seascapes of the Highwaymen, a group of Black artists active between the 1950s and 1980s who sold their landscape paintings from the trunks of their cars.
