Works by Jennifer Allora (*1974 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania) and Guillermo Calzadilla (*1971 in Havana) are committed to social issues and examine the roles of artists in social movements. In their works, this team of artists often refers to certain places or events. Our Collector’s Edition features a still from the video Under Discussion, shot on the island of Vieques, which belongs to Puerto Rico. Using a “negotiating table” as a motorboat, the artists draw attention to the debates about environmental protection and tourism on the island, which has long been used by the United States Navy for naval maneuvers and over time has been contaminated with lead, mercury, uranium, and other poisonous substances.
