Do Ho Suh - Lightswitch - 2018
Suh has a fascination with everyday objects that we touch all the time, such as a light switch. For the edition, Suh has collected used light switches and mounted them on a board. A piece of polyester fabric has then been pinned over each unique object and an extract from Suh’s diary embroidered in rainbow-coloured thread over the top, resulting in a series of works, each exquisitely made and subtly different.
Parallels can be drawn with Suh’s thread drawings and his large-scale sculptural installations which recreate intimate dwelling spaces and domestic objects in coloured fabric. The used light switches retain a history of everyone’s touch having been switched on and off everyday for years. This series is an attempt to highlight these memories and to capture a moment in Suh’s own life through the embroidery.
