Joan Jonas ‘Blue Bee’

Joan Jonas, Blue Bee, 2015

Joan Jonas, Blue Bee, 2015Jonas wrote art history in the 1960s as one of the first female artists to develop a new kind of art comprised of dance, installation, and video: the Happening. Out of this action-oriented art, most of which involved the audience, arose her attention-getting performances. In a virtuoso manner Jonas braids together video, sound, music, images, text, movement, and objects in space to create multifaceted, symbolic narratives about visual perception and the (one’s own) body in relation to environment and audience; about female identity, masquerade, and her role as a woman and an artist, as well as about legends and myths.

We are very pleased to be able to offer you this edition by this pioneering, extraordinarily influential performance artist, whom Rudi Fuchs respectfully called the “Grande dame of performance.” Blue Bee, a digital print based on one of the artist’s drawings, is available on top-quality Hahnemühle paper. It is a gem among our selections of artist’s editions—a must-have for all those who love contemporary art, for the multimedia artist is more in demand than ever: after participating in the Documenta in Kassel six times, she will create the American pavilion at the 2015 Venice Biennial.
